Aylesbury took the county-town title in the eighteenth century, but Buckingham had held it since the tenth, and the town is still centred on its historic market place, with plenty of eighteenth-century buildings. The Hidden Quarter, mostly along Well Street and Bridge Street, is where the independent shops gather, and the cafes and restaurants of the centre sit alongside the national chains.

Start at the market place, or meet in the next town
In Buckingham itself, the market place is the obvious spot to name for a first drink, with the centre's cafes and restaurants close to hand. If you'd rather start with a walk, Stowe's historic gardens, in the care of the National Trust, lie out along the A422.
Out of town, Winslow is six miles away, Stony Stratford seven and Brackley just over seven, so there are three easy halfway points if your match would rather not drive into Buckingham. Whichever you choose, tell a friend the plan, keep the first meeting public and arrange your own way back. You can block anyone who won't take no for an answer.
