In Rutland, nobody's far away
Rutland was the smallest of England's historic counties, and it still feels like it: about 41,000 people, two towns and a reservoir in the middle.
Oakham, in the west, has the castle and the county museum. Uppingham is in the south. Everywhere else is villages such as Cottesmore and Ketton, their older buildings of local limestone and ironstone, among low, rolling hills. Rutland Water, made in the 1970s and almost cut in two by the Hambleton Peninsula, fills the centre, and its nature reserve is where ospreys breed and wildfowl see out the winter.
For a hookup, a place this size cuts both ways. The high street is hardly anonymous, but nobody lives far from anybody, and Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire are all on the doorstep.
Look to Peterborough and Leicester for more choice

- Take the train if it suits. Oakham has a direct service to London St Pancras by way of Corby, running since 2009, when Rutland finally got a direct line to the capital.
