Eccles is famous for a cake. The town behind the pastry sits three miles west of Salford's centre and four from Manchester's, split by the M602 and edged to the south by the Manchester Ship Canal.

It grew up around St Mary's, a 13th-century parish church that's still the only Grade I listed building in Eccles, turned to textiles in the Industrial Revolution and then spread out along the route of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It also has an odd claim to fame: in 1901 it became the first municipal corporation in England to run a motorised fire engine, so the town has form when things heat up.
