Carmarthen stands on the site of a Roman town and has a claim to be the oldest town in Wales. In the Middle Ages it was two places, Old Carmarthen around the priory and New Carmarthen around the castle, until the pair were merged into a single borough in 1546. It went on to be the most populous borough in Wales from the 16th century to the 18th, before the coalfield towns grew past it.

Today it is the county town of Carmarthenshire, a market town on the River Towy about eight miles above the estuary, with some 16,500 people in its built-up area at the 2021 census. In Welsh it is Caerfyrddin, and in English it is said kar-MAR-dhen, in case you want to sound as though you have been before.
