A small county, easy to cross for a hookup

Beds is a small county, 477 square miles with about 750,000 people, and it sits across many of the main roads and railways that link London with the Midlands and the North. Luton, the largest town, is at the southern end, with Dunstable right alongside it and Leighton Buzzard to the south-west. Bedford is up in the centre-north, on the River Great Ouse, which winds its way down to the town and then turns north-east towards St Neots.

In between, the land is a gentle clay plateau crossed by the Greensand Ridge, with the chalk of the Chilterns around Luton. Some big names are based here: Vauxhall, easyJet and TUI Airways in Luton, Whitbread in Houghton Regis, Costa Coffee in Dunstable, Jordans Cereals in Biggleswade and the Kier Group in Sandy. That's a lot of workplaces for a small county.

Somewhere public in Beds, by day or night

For a first drink, Luton, the largest town, and Bedford are the obvious places to start. For daylight, try a walk: the lakes at Priory Country Park were dug as gravel pits, as were those at Wyboston and Felmersham, and the Dunstable Downs climb to 243 metres, the highest ground in Bedfordshire. The county is relatively dry for the UK, with March usually the driest month, so an outdoor first meeting is a reasonable bet.
